2月に、ＹＡＭＡＳＡのスピーチ大会で、このスピーチをした。もちろん、緊張したが、本当にいい経験だったと思う。

「どこでも住んだら…」

枕のように、私はアパートのベッドに座っています。冬の空気が氷のように冷たくて、ヒーターがついています。山のように洗濯物が積んであるので、いすが見えません。パソコンで音楽をうるさく掛けているので、隣の人に迷惑をかけています。ボリュームを下げたほうがいいと思います。実は、水曜日までに、スピーチを書いて出さなければならなくて、すごく悩んでいます。

一日だけ作家になりたいですが、無理だと思います。スピーチというのは大変で、どうしてもテーマが決められません。それに、10ヶ月勉強しましたが、日本語で考えられません。日本語は難しい言葉、それは分かりますが、残念ながら予想したほどうまくなりませんでした。それは私のせいです。多分、英語でしゃべりすぎたし、英語で書かれた新聞を読みすぎたし、まじめではありませんでした。それに、日本で友達は作りにくいと思います。例えば、よくスターバックスへ行きました。でも、誰が知らない人とスターバックスで話したいでしょうか。誰もしたくないでしょう、まるでナンパみたいですから。しかし、日本人の友達ができなかったけれども、まじめに勉強しなかったけれども、たくさんのことを学びました。

違う言葉なのに、日本語と英語を比べると、同じところが多くて、びっくりしました。つまり、人間の言葉は似ているということです。名詞、動詞、形容詞などが共通です。言葉と同じように、世界中の人間の生活も似ていると思います。けれども、日本へ来て、旅行する人のような目で日本を経験したら、もちろん現実が見えません。それと、アメリカでは、日本のイメージがおかしいです。日本人は毎日寿司を食べているし、アニメをテレビで見ているし、自分で考えられないなどと言われています。これは現実でしょうか。私は旅行で日本へ来た時、日本の生活、日本文化はアメリカと比べるとずいぶん違うと思いました。しかし、ここに住んでいる経験から、日本の生活が普通なことをはっきり理解できるようになりました。例えば、日本人は毎日寿司を食べていなくて、スーパーへ食品を買いに行っています。日本人にとっては、アニメは毎日見るものではないし、特別なものではありません。仕事をしたり、家賃を払ったりしなければならないし、同僚、友達、家族について悩んでいます。それが、普通の生活ではないでしょうか。つまり、文化のカーテンの後ろに人間の本質が隠れています。それが私が学んだ一番大切なことだと思います。

Experienced two earthquakes today. Not sure how big the second one was, but the first was M6.0. A bit far from the epicenter, so was felt as 3 JMA where I live. Was just getting into the shower when I started feeling dizzy, except quickly realized it wasn’t dizziness but rather the room moving around me. Thirty seconds of random, lateral movements. The building was creaking and the light hanging from the ceiling was swinging gently. Exciting stuff. Second earthquake occurred while at work, this one lasting 20 seconds or so. Probably regret saying it, but earthquakes are entertaining. Kinda like tornadoes. Terrifying, but you want to run to the window and see what’s happening.

Tonight, had dinner with a friend in 代官山 (Daikanyama) which is, from what I can tell, the nerve center of the hair-salon industrial complex. We eventually found a place to eat called はちまん食堂 (Hachiman Shokudou). Beers were a bit small for the price but the kampachi was excellent. Price per person was about ¥3700. Afterwards, we walked down the hill to Frames and enjoyed a respectable apple pie(?) and coffee at ¥1300. Both places were packed with young people. Lots of them brought their dogs for some reason. I’m not a dog person. Was that a terrier eyeing my apple pie?

…you realize for the past two weeks you’ve been saying “menstruation” rather than “arrange”.

A little while ago I bought an electronic dictionary to use during all those clueless moments in Japanese class. I ended up buying the Sharp PW-9910 at Bic’s Camera in Nagoya for ¥23,800 because the processor was faster than other models with comparable features. (If you’re looking to buy, by the way, I recommend reading the very informative Japanese-English-Japanese Electronic Dictionaries website.)

Most electronic dictionaries these days keep lists of recently accessed entries. I rarely use these lists, but the other day I took at look. There, stored in my dictionary, was a snapshot of numerous conversations I’ve had over the past couple months, packaged and presented in one big block. Since these terms are lookups into the English-Japanese dictionary, most of them originated in my brain during the course of conversations. Presented out of context and in an amalgamated form…geeze, what was I thinking? Without context, our daily lives make no sense.
